Think about your audience

This article isn't about writers trying to find an audience, instead it's about everyone responding, commenting, and posting on social media. Here are some things to think about when you're getting ready to post something or when trying to get your message across to someone.
First off, ask these questions: What is your message? Is it constructive? Is this an opinion or is it fact?
Think about what you are going to write before you start writing. Think about your message. Could it upset someone? Granted, we shouldn't have to tiptoe around every subject but, if you're going to respond to someone, it's a good idea to think about your message first, re-read your comment, and maybe even, delete your comment, especially if you're responding to someone in the heat of the moment.
Take a moment to put your emotions in check. We see this all too often on social media, the bickering, the fighting, the arguing, the "take me off of your friend's list if you don't agree", etc. Instead, put your phone down, walk away from your computer, do something else before responding to someone who has gone off about a sensitive subject, maybe even disregard the comment, scroll past it, or un-follow someone. By un-following someone, you won't see their posts on Facebook anymore, yet you still maintain a connection, whether it be personal or professional. Of course, there are times when maybe you should consider unfriending someone due to constant negativity, disrespect, constant arguing and/or, fighting.
If you're offering criticism, is it constructive? One of my author friends said it best; there is constructive criticism and then there is de-constructive criticism. Don't name call, belittle, berate, or threaten others. This is called bullying and on social media, this is considered cyber bullying, something which can be followed up with legal action. Think about what you're saying and doing first.
If you're stating a fact, make sure to get your facts straight before posting. Granted, there may be times when the facts aren't completely available. It's still alright to publish your post, just make sure to continue to research to find the facts so you can re-edit or add to your statement. If you are basing a post on opinion, make sure to identify this by stating so in your post.
So, to sum it up, think about your audience, think about their feelings, think about what you're saying, and what impression you're giving. Remember, if the person on the other end of the computer hasn't been so kind, ask questions, maybe they are confused as to what's being said. Also, don't take things personal. The comments being said may not be directed at you, but at a situation and/or a misunderstanding.
If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to message me. Happy posting, my friends!
